PURPOSE:To make it possible to perform running, by actuating a brake while turning off a motor when if the deviation between a desired displacement of a motor for continuously changing the torque ratio, which is determined in accordance with a vehicle running condition, and a feed-back value thereof exceeds a predetermined condition and is held for more than a predetermined time. CONSTITUTION:An electronic control unit 108 receives signals from various sensors, and controls a motor 107 in accordance with a vehicle running condition so as to continuously change the torque ratio of a belt type continuously variable transmission 102. In this arrangement, when the deviation between a desired displacement determined in accordance with a vehicle running condition and a feed-back value of a motor displacement detected by a motor rotational speed signal sensor 116 is out of a predetermined range and is held for more than a predetermined time, a motor brake 107 is operated while the drive of the motor 107 is turned off. Thus, in the case of impossible control, the motor brake is actuated so as to fix the torque ratio, thereby it is possible to eliminate inferior running when the motor or a drive fails.
