Flexible measurement and control system

In a distributed control system having a flexible architecture, flexible interface nodes 12A, 12B are provided to allow the control system to interact with a variety of sensors and a variety of actuators. The flexible nodes include a transducer module and a common core module connected to the transducer module, the common core module configuring itself in accordance with the transducer module to which it is connected. The aim is provide a system that is flexible enough to cope with changes of sensor and or actuator type eg updating, or of operating conditions eg to cope with extreme or emergency conditions without needing significant changes to the control system itself.
