PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control oxidation-reduction conditions in a system by adding a specified quantity of polythionate to an absorbing solution thereby suppressing corrosion and gas production. SOLUTION: In an operating method of an absorption hot and chilled water generator employing an aqueous solution containing a halide salt as an absorbing solution, composition of the aqueous solution is determined based on the fact that polythionate acts as a reducing agent in its reduction system. Polythionate is preferably added by 400-1000 ppm, in terms of sodium tetrathionate. If it is lower than 400 ppm, reducing power is insufficient and the effect as an inhibiter is not exhibited sufficiently. Tetrathionate is preferably employed as the polythionate and a mixture of LiBr, LiI, LiNO3 and LiCl is preferably employed as the halide salt. Furthermore, stainless steel and copper or a copper alloy are employed, respectively, on the high temperature side and the low temperature side at a part of the apparatus touching the absorbing solution.
