PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely and easily exchange a data cartridge by providing a cartridge engagement assembly which is fitted in a data storage device and movable along a replacement path and a panel which is arranged adjacently to part of the replacement path and has a cartridge change hole large enough to pass the data cartridge. SOLUTION: When a data cartridge 14 is replaced, the cartridge engagement assembly 16 detaches the selected data cartridge 14 from a cartridge reception device 20 and conveys the data cartridge 14 to a cartridge replacement door 38. An actuator device moves the cartridge engagement assembly 16 or a picker along the replacement path 50 until the cartridge engagement assembly 16 or picker is positioned opposite the cartridge replacement door 38. Once correctly positioned, the cartridge engagement assembly 16 or picker ejects the data cartridge 14.
