PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the power consumption of a semiconductor memory device wherein a part of circuit blocks is needed to be activated in a period other than reading/writing operation. SOLUTION: This semiconductor memory device is provided with row and column circuit blocks 121 and 122 for controlling access to a memory array 100, a data circuit block 123 for transferring data between it and the memory cell array 100, and a control circuit 140 for changing at least a part of the circuit blocks 121 to 123 from a standby state to an active state in response to the fact that a predetermined mode signal is set in a mode register 150. Even when it is necessary to activate a predetermined circuit block by an operation different from a reading/writing operation, it is not necessary to always activate the circuit blocks.
