Salts of diaminoketones are prepared by heating at least 2 mols of an anhydrous alkaline earth metal oxide to a temperature of from 250 DEG to 500 DEG C. with a lactam or polyamide of an aminocarboxylic acid in an amount providing the equivalent of approximately 1 mol. of said aminocarboxylic acid, distilling of the volatile fractions comprising intermediate Schiff's bases and either hydrolysing said bases in aqueous mineral acid to form the salts of diaminoketones directly, or treating said bases with hot caustic alkali solution and dissolving the resulting product in aqueous mineral acid to form the diaminoketone salts. Preferred lactams have 5 to 9 ring members and may be substituted by alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl groups. Polycaprolactam is specified as a suitable polyamide. Specified mineral acids are hydrochloric, sulphuric and phosphoric acids. On treatment with bases, the salts of the diaminoketones give unstable diaminoketones which cyclise to form Schiff's bases. The latter may also be converted into organic acid salts of diaminoketones by treatment with, for example, acetic, propionic and oxalic acids. Examples describe the preparation of salts of 1,11-diamino-6-undecanone and 1,7-diamino-4-heptanone. |
