In a positive displacement compressor of the wet or flooded intermeshing screw rotor type, the main barrel portion 10, Fig. 1 of the casing including the intersecting co-planar bores (14), (16), Fig. 2 (not shown) is relieved at 40 to form an abrupt helical shoulder 42 and a radially inwardly extending lip 44 which is a close running fit with the male and female rotors 18, 20 respectively. This prevents the cooling and sealing liquid injected into the casing through openings 36 on the intersection 38 of the bores on the high pressure side of the working space being mixed with the increasing gaseous fluid passing through the axially directed inlet port 22 and so transferring heat thereto. It also reduces so called "churning" losses brought about by the blow-back from the high pressure end of the compressor through the running clearances between the rotors and the bores, the lip preventing gas and liquid being returned through the inlet port 22. |
