A boom assembly suitable for spraying pesticides comprises a pair of inner boom members 2, 2', a double-acting piston and cylinder device 7, 6 adapted to swing the said members about vertical pivots 4, 4' from an inoperative position through a right angle to an operative position transverse to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder 6, and a pair of outer boom members 3, 3', each connected to its respective inner member by means of a vertical pivot. Transmission rods 9, 9' connect the members 2, 2' to a head 8 attached to the piston rod 7 and chains 13, 13' pass around sprockets coaxial with the vertical pivots and ensure that the outer boom members 3, 3' are automatically pivoted on movement of the piston rod. The pivot points 10, 10' of the rods 9, 9' lie outside the pivots 4, 4' connecting the members 2, 2' to the cylinder support 1. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) the inner members 2, 2' are provided with a common vertical pivot provided with coaxial sprockets and in the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the chains actuating the outer members are replaced by rods having tensioning devices. |
