A process for preparing terphthalic acid from p-diahylbenzene or an intermediate oxidation product by reacting them with molecular oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen in a 2-4C aliphatic monocarboxylic acid solvent having 2-4C atoms in presence of a heavy metal catalyst. The gas containing molecular oxygen is injected in the lower conical portion of the vertical cylindrical reactor dispersed in the reaction liquid at a distance L from the liquid level by a tube, the reaction materials being supplied at a point near the middle of the reactor at a distance L from the liquid level, the ratio 2/6 being between 1/4 and 1/3, the temperature being controllable between 80 deg. and 150 deg.C and the pressure at a value between 1 and 100 atmospheres.
