In a process for producing TiO 2 by reacting TiCl 4 with O 2 using an auxiliary CO flame, a part of the CO and all the O 2 are introduced into a gas-permeable ceramic plate and combusted immediately downstream of it to give a hot O 2 - containing laminar flowing stream, TiCl 4 vapour is introduced axially into this stream in one or more jets which have turbulence, and each jet is surrounded by a shell of the other part of the CO. The plate may be perforated or may be a frit. The CO and O 2 may be fed to the plate separately or mixed. Preferably the amount of CO is such as to give a temperature in the plate of 1000-1700‹ C. Either part of the CO may be mixed with an inert gas, e.g. N 2 , Cl 2 , or reaction waste gas, e.g. part of the O 2 may be replaced by air. The TiCl 4 may contain minor amounts of AlCl 3 , SiCl 4 , ZrCl 4 , or H 2 O vapour. In Fig. 1, CO + O 2 is fed at 24 and through cylindrical bores 11 and perforations 10 in plate 2, which may be cylindrical or conical and inclined at not more than 20 degrees to the axis. TiCl 4 is fed at 26 and CO at 25 to feeds 12, each of which comprises tangential inlet (18) to inner pipe (13) having constriction (22) at its lower end and an enlarged mouth, for TiCl 4 , and inlet (16) to annulus (15) for the CO (Fig. 2, not shown).
