PURPOSE: To provide a connecting catalyst having high rates of conversion of CO and HC (hydrocarbons) and also having a high rate of removal of NOx without producing N2 O as a by-product and to provide a purifying method using the catalyst as a method for purifying exhaust gas contg. reducing components including HC, an excess of oxygen over the stoichiometric amt. required to completely oxidize all the reducing components and NOx . CONSTITUTION: This catalyst is connecting catalyst consisting of an HC oxidation catalyst and an NOx decomposition catalyst. At least two catalyst zones are disposed in a flow of exhaust gas, exhaust gas is brought into contact with the HC oxidation catalyst in the 1st zone on the upper stream side to reduce the concn. of HC in the exhaust gas and then the exhaust gas is brought into contact with the NOx decomposition catalyst in the 2nd zone on the downstream side. The exhaust gas is purified. |
