PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always keep an optimum sampling phase for an AD converter by impressing a pulse from an electric charge injection part inserting a reference pulse in an area where an output pixel signal is not effective, detecting the reference pulse from a signal outputted from a signal electric charge part and executing AD conversion using a sampling pulse whose phase is dynamically adjusted on the basis of the phase delay of the reference pulse. SOLUTION: Signal electric charges for one line stored in a photoelectric conversion part 21 are transferred to a horizontal transfer part 23 by a vertical transfer part 22 at every horizontal period. The signal electric charge transferred to the horizontal transfer part 23 is horizontally transferred in the direction of a signal electric charge detecting part 24 within one horizontal period, converted into a voltage by the part 24 and adopted as the output of a solid- state image pickup device. Whenever a vertical transfer pulse is supplied to the solid-state image pickup device, an injection pulse is inputted from the electric charge injection part 25 at the top of the horizontal transfer pulse. As a result, the reference pulse can be inserted just after an output pixel signal effective part in the solid-state image pickup device output signal. The reference pulse is extracted just before inputting to the AD converter.
