<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gasoline engine controller capable of securing the combustion stability while the NOx emission amount is suppressed when the combustion system is to be changed over from self-ignition into spark ignition. <P>SOLUTION: The controller of a gasoline engine furnished with a three-dimensional catalyst in the exhaust passage is equipped with a combustion control means to make changing-over between the spark ignition combustion system and the self-ignition combustion system to generate combustion by allowing the mixture gas in each cylinder to fire by itself with the first air-fuel ratio which is leaner than in the spark ignition combustion system, and a valve timing control means to control the valve timing of a suction valve and the exhaust valve into the first valve timing when the combustion is operating in the spark ignition combustion system, and when in the self-ignition combustion system, control the valve timing into the second valve timing at which both the suction valve and the exhaust valve are closed in the range around the exhaust upper dead center, wherein the combustion control means generates combustion by allowing the mixture gas to fire by itself with the second air-fuel ratio richer than the first in transition from the self-ignition combustion system to the spark ignition combustion system. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
