摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lateral field type liquid crystal display device that suppresses reduction in viewing angle contrast characteristics when a stress is applied to a liquid crystal panel and that has little variation in the viewing angle contrast.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has a lateral field system liquid crystal panel that includes an array substrate where a plurality of thin film transistors is arranged, a counter substrate disposed opposing to the array substrate, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the array substrate and the counter substrate and that drives a liquid crystal by an electric field generated parallel to the array substrate and the counter substrate. The liquid crystal panel includes the following retardation film outside at least either of the array substrate and the counter substrate. The retardation film has a slow axis in a direction perpendicular to a retardation induced oblique to the major surfaces of the array substrate and of the counter substrate when a stress is applied to the liquid crystal panel, and has a retardation in an opposite sign to that of the induced retardation.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
