Organotin mercapto acid esters of formula R n SnX 4-n wherein R represents an alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, aralkyl or cycloalkyl group, X represents the residue of an ester of a mercapto acid having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and having its sulphur linked to the tin atom and n is 1, 2 or 3 are prepared by reacting an ester of a mercapto acid with an organotin halide or oxide in the presence of at least 60% by weight of an inert organic solvent. Preferably 60- 90% by weight of the solvent is used. Solvents specified include benzene, toluene, xylene, hexane, mineral spirits, naphtha, methanol, ethanol, acetone, methyl isobutyl ketone, and methyl acetate. The reaction may be carried out at a temperature between approximately 50‹ C. and the reflux temperature of the mixture, water produced by reaction being removed by azeotropic distillation. The process is particularly applicable to the preparation of dibutyl tin bis-(iso-octyl thioglycollate). |
