Novel isophthalic acid derivatives of formula in which R1 is alkoxy, R2 is the group R6R7N-wherein R6 and R7 are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl, or together form a heterocyclic ring with the nitrogen atom, R3 is hydroxyl, and R4 is an alkenyl radical which may be substituted by at least one alkyl radical, are prepared by aminating a 4-hydroxy-isophthalic acid dialkyl ester or by partially saponifying the 4-hydroxy-isophthalic acid dialkyl ester using an alcoholic alkali metal hydroxide solution with the addition of catalytic amounts of water, converting the 1-monoalkyl ester obtained into the corresponding acid chloride using a chlorination agent, and aminating the acid chloride with an amine in the presence of an inert solvent.
