Butadiene-1,3 is polymerized, e.g. in a hydrocarbon diluent and in the presence of a stereospecific catalyst to produce a butadiene polymer containing at least 85% cis-1,4-units, and prior to deactivation of the catalyst there is added to the polymerization a halogenated organic compound containing olefinic unsaturation or an ether linkage and containing at least two halogen atoms attached to carbon atoms which are adjacent the double bond or the ether oxygen atom. After the addition of the halogenated compound the polymerization mixture may be held at a temperature of 10 DEG to 250 DEG F. for from 5 minutes to 5 hours before inactivation of the catalyst. The Specification includes lists of halogenated compounds and catalysts. The deactivation of the catalyst is effected by conventional low-pressure methods. In Example I, the polymerization is effected with a catalyst consisting of triisobutylaluminium, I2, and TiCl4, and hexachlorpropene and hexachlorocyclopentadiene added to different runs, and subsequently the polymer recovered after addition of an isopropyl alcohol solution of 2,21-methylene-bis-(4-methyl-6-tert.-butylphenol), and in Example II butadiene was polymerized under the same conditions as Example I, except that the halogenated compound used was bis(chloromethyl) ether. |
