The presence of a manually inserted card is detected by a photo-cell (65), not shown, and energizes the forward winding of a synchronous motor 15 coupled to a roller on spindle 18 so that the latter drives the card forward by engaging one edge thereof. When the card arrives at a pre-read position, the photo-cell (65) is unmasked and the reading cells 56 are masked by the leading card edge, and this causes motor 15 to be de-energized. Magnets such as 52 are then energized to raise flap 50, blocking the card inlet, to raise shutter 45 so that a guide 63 carried by an endless band 37 trained round pulleys 48, 38 engages behind the rear card edge, and to lower spindle 18. Forward pulses from a control unit drive a stepping motor coupled to pulley 38 so that band 37 carries the card column-by-column past reading cells 56. Band 37 also carries coded perforations identifying the numbers of corresponding columns of a card, and these perforations are sensed by cells 60 At any time, provided band 37 is not in its zero position detected by two of cells 60, the control unit may supply backward stepping- pulses so that certain columns of the card may be read more than once. When the card is again in the pre-read position, the magnets and motors are de-energized until an eject signal is received from the control unit, whereupon motor 15 is energized for a fixed time duration in the reverse direction and magnet 35 is energized to engage rollers 33, 24 to eject the card. |
