A process for the production of a filament-forming linear polyamide, comprises heating a diamine-dicarboxylic acid salt as a dry finely-divided solid until a polymer having an inherent viscosity of approximately 1 or higher is obtained, the temperature at any particular time being below the melting point of the polymerizing solid at that time and within 55 DEG C. of the melting point, and causing relative movement between the polymerizing particles to maintain them discrete throughout the process. The inherent viscosity is defined as the function <FORM:0996218/C3/1> at 25 DEG C. and 0.4 gm. per decilitre polymer concentration of a solution of the polymer in concentrated sulphuric acid where Nr is the relative viscosity of the solution at 25 DEG C. and C is the polymer concentration in grams per decilitre. Inert diluents, e.g. toluene, benzene,-phenol, hydroquinone, resorcinol, p-phenyl phenol or diphenyl ether may be present in the reaction mixture. The examples describe the preparation of polyhexamethylene terephthamide. |
