In the operation of a continuous metal refining unit comprising a series of receptacles of which the first, the reaction container, communicates with the last, which has a slag outfeed opening communicating with the atmosphere, the reaction container and the last receptacle are provided with ducts for removal of gases produced, the amount of gas extracted directly from the reaction container being controlled to be less than the total amount produced in normal operation and the amount of gases extracted from the last receptacle being controlled to equal the remainder so as to obtain equilibrium between the gas pressures inside and outside the unit in the region of the slag outflow to avoid either loss of gases to the atmosphere or their contamination with indrawn air. In the Figure gases are extracted from reaction container 10 through duct 14 and from the slag separation receptacle 12 through duct 15, the ducts being combined at 16 with hood 18 leading to extraction fan 20. Flow of gases in controlled by shutters 22 and 17 and the position of these shutters is controlled automatically by a regulator 25 to which is fed as input information the differential pressure between 24a and 24b respectively within and without the last receptacle in the region of the slag outflow. |
