[Also in Division C3] Nitroxides of the general formula (in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 denote alkyl groups that may or may not be substituted, A denotes at least one independent organic group and contains a substituent (" attaching group ") which is either -NHCOCH 2 X or -OCOCH 2 X where X is Br or I) may be prepared by reacting the corresponding free radical nitroxides in which A contains an amino or hydroxyl group with a haloacetic acid, anhydride or halide. The iodo compounds can be obtained from the corresponding bromo derivatives by reaction with NaI. Preferred compounds are those of the formula (in which Y denotes -NHCOCH 2 X or -OCOCH 2 X), and those of the first formula in which A completes a ring with C 1 , C 2 and the N atom, particularly N-(1-oxyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrrolidinyl)-bromo (and iodo) acetamide, and N - (1 - oxyl - 2,2,6,6 - tetramethyl - 4- piperidinyl) iodo acetamide. These and other nitroxides bearing the same " attaching groups " can react with biologically active molecules, including methionine and cysteine, and are useful for " spin-labelling " these materials.
