PURPOSE:To provide optical fiber having low transmission loss and easy to produce by making refractive index of core high and that of clad lower than that of core, both essentially consisting of GeO2. CONSTITUTION:In optical fiber having core with high refractive index and clad with that lower than core, the core and clad composition consist of GeO2 and SiO2, with GeO2 content greater than 50mol%. This composition may contain 0.1-10 mol% of P2O5 to control loss due to scattering. Particularly when GeO2 is used for core, and high GeO2 content for clad, the composition gives the number of openings exceeding those provided by conventional SiO2-based optical fiber having the same relative refractive index difference. |
