The machine-tool spindle has a cylindrical location bore (3) and at its end face a plurality of annular supporting surfaces (4, 5, 6) which are concentric to one another and are delimited from one another by annular grooves (7, 8) made in the end face. The tool holders (9a) have fitting pins (10) of the same diameter fitting into the location bore (3) but have different shank diameters (D3) differing from one another in increments, the outer diameter (d1, d2, d3) of each supporting surface (4, 5, 6) being slightly smaller than the outside diameter (D3) of the annular surface (12a) of the associated tool holder (9a). When the annular surface (12a), provided at the transition between shank and fitting pin (10), of a tool holder (9a) bears against the associated supporting surface (4, 5, 6), the supporting surface(s) lying radially further to the inside is (are) arranged at an axial distance from the opposite radial surface of the tool holder (9a). <IMAGE>
