The press roller, especially for extracting water from a wet paper web, has a section (9) at least at one end of the press zone (8) with a greater flexibility than the other zone of the press mantle (1), without weakening the press mantle (1) at the more flexible section (9). Preferably the flexible section (9) extends from a point within the press zone (8) to a point outside the press zone (8). The flexible zone (9) is thinner than the press zone (8) of the mantle (1), with a continuous thickness decrease axially outwards. The outer surface (10) of the press mantle (1) is at a downwards sloping angle in the outer section (9), towards the end of the mantle, at an angle ( alpha ) <= 3 deg and pref. <= 2 deg to the press zone (8) surface. The more flexible zone (9) is especially of a soft elastomer material. The axial width of the flexible section (9) is at least 20 mm and pref. at least 30 mm and especially at least 50 mm. The press (8) and flexible (9) sections overlap by at least 10 mm and pref. at least 20 mm and especially at least 30 mm. The flexible section (9) extends into the press zone (8) by at least 10 mm and pref. at least 20 mm and especially at least 40 mm.
