PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composite material which satisfies lightness from the viewpoint of energy saving and easy working property as well as high strength (high thermal shock resistance) at high temperature, high reliability (toughness, shock and wear resistances) as a material, environmental resistance (corrosion, oxidation and radiation resistances), or the like, is obtained at a more reasonable cost and is not substantially oxidized even at a high temperature of >=800 deg.C, and to provide a method for producing the composite material. SOLUTION: A slurry comprising metallic silicon and a phenolic resin is impregnated into a mullite material, air-dried and calcined at <=1,000 deg.C in an inert atmosphere to carbonize the phenolic resin, the temperature is raised to 1,200-1,800 deg.C in the same atmosphere and all the metallic silicon is substantially reacted with carbon in the temperature range to form a surface layer comprising silicon carbide and a matrix. The objective composite material which is not substantially oxidized even at a high temperature of >=800 deg.C and has 10-200 MPa bending strength and 0.8-3.5 g/cc bulk density is produced. |
