The box occupies 2-100% of the section (S) of the chamber. The reaction chamber contains a perforate plate diffuser (77) and a distribution plate downstream of the box and a second catalyst bed. A gas containing hydrogen is circulated through the catalyst bed with a quenching fluid introduced downstream.
