1,085,591. Headboxes. BELOIT CORPORATION. Jan. 14, 1965 [Jan. 17, 1964], No. 1672/65. Heading D2A. A headbox, which contains two rows 40, 41 of rods to produce vortex turbulence in the stock, has converging walls 11, 12 which cause a gradual increase in the stock velocity in the machine direction, the walls being contoured to define a plurality of alternate areas of increasing and decreasing cross-section so that localized decreases and increases in velocity are imposed upon the general increasing velocity of the stock to produce shear turbulence therein. Wall 1 is suitably contoured by removable inserts 15, 16. A series of tubes 52, each having a non-corrosive lining 53 of synthetic rubber, link stock inlet 50, which extends in the cross-machine direction and is tapered, to the tapered channel 13. The slice comprises parallel walls 11B, 12B and has height adjustment means 17-22 arranged at intervals in the cross-machine direction. Walls 11B, 11C are pivoted at 30 and raisable out of operating position by motor 33. Stock inlet 50 may be of the re-circulation type or of the pressurized air type. Various dimensions of the parts of the headbox are given. |
