1284973 Aircraft load supporting apparatus UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 3 April 1970 [19 May 1969] 15872/70 Heading B7W [Also in Division B8] An aircraft having elevating and lowering means comprises a guidance cage 40 to align the load or load beam 28, during lifting, into a selected orientation defined by a restraining slot formed in the cage, the latter having smooth guiding surfaces intermediate the slot and pointed end sections 46, 48 of the cage, coaction of said surfaces with the load or load beam during elevation guiding the latter into the slot. In operation a contoured load or a load 34 suspended from beam 28 is winched up by a helicopter and is channelled into the slot by the cage formed of U-shaped rails, frictional contact between the rails and beam being reduced by rollers or anti-friction stripping 80 mounted thereon and on reaching the slot, the beam or contoured load triggers an actuator (96), Fig. 3 (not shown), to prevent further upward movement, shock absorbers (70) also being provided in the slot. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 13 (not shown), the cage is a cylinder (140), the lower edge of which is shaped to define the slot and guiding surfaces. Various modes of load attachment incorporating quick-release cargo hooks are described and a severing mechanism (123, 125), Fig. 9 (not shown), for the hoist cable may be provided for jettisonning the load. The cage may be detachable so as to allow separate winching-up from the ground and modifications of the rails of the cage are described, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown). |
