[Also in Division C3] Substrates are coated with compositions containing thermosetting resins which are prepared by copolymerising (a) a mono- or dibasic α, #-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid (b) a neutral ester or an ester containing hydroxy groups of (a) with a mono- or polyhydric alcohol having 1 to 18 carbon atoms and (c) a copolymerisable monomer which does not contain hydroxyl groups and, during or after the copolymerisation reaction, reacting at least 25% of the carboxyl groups of component (a) with cyanamide to yield a product having an acid member of at least 5, the acid member of the material which has not been reacted with cyanamide having been reduced by at least 10 as compared to the starting mixture of components (a), (b) and (c) and thereafter reacting the copolymer obtained with an aldehyde. In the Examples a metal substrates are coated. |
