The salt bath steel nitriding tank consists of an outer steel tank with a loose cylindrical sleeve contg. the heat treatment salt above a molten metal bath at the bottom and a neutral salt bath filling the gap between sleeve and outer tank. In the prefd. design the sleeve consists of Ti whilst molten Pb, Sn, Hg or their alloys cover the bottom, whilst a neutral alkaline halide of m.pt. 500 degrees C fills the gap between sleeve and tank. There is no thermal stress on liner, hence there is no restraint on size of tank and increased service life.
