Epoxy resins of higher molecular weight are produced from a first epoxy resin containing more than one but not more than two wc-epoxy groups per molecule by reaction with a dihydric phenol in the ratio of one equivalent of epoxy group of the first resin to less than one equivalent of phenolic hydroxyl at 50-150‹ C. in the presence of an amine catalyst. The catalysts have the formula NRR1R11 in which R, R1 and R11 are the same or different and at least one is a hydrocarbon group of up to 22 carbon atoms having a methylene group adjacent the nitrogen atom and being free from groups reactive with epoxide groups, or a hydrocarbon group of up to 10 carbon atoms having an ethylene group adjacent the nitrogen with a #-hydroxyl substituent but otherwise free from groups reactive with epoxy groups, any of the substituents R, R1 and R11 remaining being hydrogen atoms. The catalyst is used in an amount which is, where it is a secondary or tertiary amine having no #-hydroxyl-containing substituent or a tertiary amine having a single such substituent, 0À0005-0À002 mole, or in any other case from 0À001-0À05 mole, per epoxide equivalent. The reaction may be performed in the presence or absence of organic solvents. The process and products claimed in Specification 1,087,166 are disclaimed.
