The hardness of a moving steel strip 16 is determined from a measure of the residual flux density in the strip measured by probe 7 downstream from a D. C. electromagnet 9 producing a field sufficiently strong to saturate the strip. It is found that the Rockwell hardness M is given by M = k'G + k" where G is the residual flux density and k' and k" are constants. The output E1 from the probe is combined with a constant voltage signal E2 and fed to a meter calibrated in hardness units.
