Mfe. of sheet metal stack consisting pref. of Al in which the sheets are formed so that two of them when placed against each other form a plate heat exchanger cavity, several of these being laid side by side, consists firstly of joining by welding adjacent Al sheets along the edge to form weld seams along it, secondly by placing alloy steel spacers into the recesses such, that the ends of the plates with the weld seams project above the spacers. Alternative pockets so created are filled by welding with Al so as to just cover the seams along the edges, followed thirdly by the filling up of the alternate residual spaces to a slightly higher level so as to overlap the previous welds. Prevents the formation of hair line cracks experienced when joining the plates with a weld at the edges only.
