Compounds are disclosed having the formula < IMG > (1) in which the stereochemistry is 5R,6S,8R or 5R,6R,8S, A represents a fluoroalkyl group, straight chain or branched chain, with 1 to 3 fluorine atoms on the same carbon atom which is separated from the 2-S atom by at least one carbon atom, and R is hydrogen, a pharmaceutically acceptable cation or a metabolisable ester group. The compounds have antibacterial activity.
