A system for determining the weight of ink in an ink fountain in a printing press and having a sensor operatively connected to the ink fountain in order to measur e the weight of the ink and to generate a signal corresponding to the ink weight, a processor that communicates with the sensor so as to receive and process the signal fr om the sensor and generates data about the weight of the ink contained in the ink fountain, a display in which the data relating to current ink usage at the ink fountain is displayed to an operator of the printing press. A method for determining the weight of ink in an ink fountain in a printing press consisting of the steps of measuring the weight of the ink using a sensor operatively connected to the ink fountain, generating a signal that corresponds to the generated weight, transmitting the signal to a processor and processing the signal to generate data about the weight of the ink and displaying the data relating to current usage at the ink fountain to an operator of the printing press. This system and method are simple in design, simple to implement and may be applied to any type of print discipline.
