The speed reduction is obtained by activating a luminous signal (10) as a speeding driver approaches, triggering an automatic slowing response. The luminous signal is activated by a radar detector (4) that senses the presence of vehicles (6) and computes their speed. The detector and luminous signal are placed at the side of the road where they will appear to be a traffic signal.
