In a synchronous machine of high power (at least 10 MVA) the windings are carried on a smooth armature without the use of slots, and because of the heavy main and quadrature flux traversing the conductors, these are closely subdivided and transposed. The conductors are divided into flat part-conductors 8 set radially (i.e. edgewise to the main flux) and stacked circumferentially to form groups, these groups being stacked radially, e.g. as shown in Fig. 6. Stacks of groups may be spaced by a cooling duct 9. Neither the conductors nor the part-conductors are transposed in the coil. However, a transposition effect is produced by connecting both across chords of the machine so that most coils are of pitch less than 180 degrees. Thus, in Fig. 3, shows a phase comprising three coils A, B and C, the port-conductors 1, 1<SP>1</SP> (for instance) of each coil being connected directly across the rotor chord, all such port-conductors being series connected as shown in Fig. 4 or 5 (not shown). In a four-pole machine as shown in Fig. 7 (not shown), the phase bands form coils 13, 14 each of ten subdivided conductors AI, AII. . . EII. These coils are connected by a conductor 15 which is transposed 180 degrees. In two-pole machines the 180 degrees twist may occur between radially separated layers. Alternatively two twists may occur between circumferentially spaced sections of the winding (M and N, in Fig. 8, not shown). The winding may be applied to the rotor, or to the stator (Fig. 9, not shown) blocks of windings being held by teeth 91.
