1,176,170. Aerials. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON-HOTCHKISS BRANDT. 4 Oct., 1966 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 44352/66. Heading H4A. According to one aspect of the invention an aerial array comprises spaced radiating apertures and energy feeding junctions, adjustable phase shifting means in the junctions to give a phase distribution pattern along the array such that the phase shift between two adjacent apertures is linearly proportional to (sin α/sin α 1 ), where α is the beam angle relative to the normal to the array and 2α 1 is the angular range over which the beam is to be positioned, and the junctions generate a field strength distribution at each aperture of the form (sin X/X) where X is linearly related to a co-ordinate along the array; the apertures may be spaced by (#/2 sin α 1 ), where # is the wavelength. Multi-mode operation may be afforded. According to another aspect of the invention the phase shift between two adjacent apertures is linearly proportional to (sin α/sin α 2 ), where α 2 is half the angle subtended at a radiation source illuminating the array of apertures. In further aspects of the invention the field strength and phase distribution patterns at the apertures are represented by successive terms of a quoted mathematical expression. Low side-lobes, in beam scanning over a wide arc, are achieved. The phase shifters may be controlled digitally as in Specification 1,160,696. It is stated that there is no mutual coupling between the array elements. Specification 1,171,628 is referred to. |
