A viscosimeter comprises a body 3 rotatable in a substance 4 to be investigated and a gear-box 2 mounted to be rotatable about the rotational axis of the body to generate a signal comprising a measure of the viscosity of the substance, the gearbox containing a right angle bevel gearing 22, 23 which drives the body and is coupled by a universal joint K to a driving motor 6. The body 3 is driven by the motor 6 via a gear-box 60, the speed of the motor being selected and stabilized by a frequency control 62. The gear-box is rotatably mounted in a casing 1 by bearings 11, 12. A shaft 21 of the gearbox is suspended from a torsion bar T and the gearbox is rotated by the reaction of the substance on the body 3 until this reaction is balanced by the restoring force exerted by the torsion bar. The angle of rotation, which is a measure of the viscosity of the substance, is measured by an electromagnetic pick-off 71, 72 and indicated on an instrument 7. The temperature of the substance 4 is controlled by, for example, a thermostatically controlled heating plate. |
