In a continuous casting of sheet or strip material in a roller casting apparatus, of alloys that undergo meta-saturation and/or dispersion hardening upon rapid cooling from the molten state, the molten alloy is introduced to the inside of a hollow rotating roller 3 just in front of a second roller 4 extending along the hollow roller 3 and rotating by its contact with the hollow roller 3 or the molten alloy 5. The molten alloy passes through a gap of less than 1 mm. between the two rollers and is rapidly cooled to form a sheet or strip 7 that is fed from the hollow roller 3 by an ejector 13. The deadweight of the roller 4 acts on the alloy and the gap between the rollers is controlled as a function of the speed of rotation of roller 3, the viscosity of the melt 5, and the pressure by which the roller 4 is applied, all of which factors may be varied. The rollers 3 and 4 are laterally aligned by a forked arm 8, or alternatively, or additionally, by a forked arm 8<SP>1</SP> incorporating a shock absorber 12. Either or both of the rollers 3 and 4 may be provided with cooling means. A meta-saturation alloy used may be a binary alloy of aluminium with Cr, Fe, Mn, W, V, Ti or Mo. The addition of silicon to the binary alloy produces the dispersion hardening effect. The meta-saturation and dispersion hardening is also achieved in a Cu-Th-B alloy. A particularly suitable alloy for casting as above described is the eutectic alloy of aluminium and silicon. Another suitable class of alloys is one having at least 70% magnesium and specified quantities Mn, Al, Zn, Ag, Bi, Li, Sn, Zr, Th, Si, Rare earth metals, Ge, Sb, Co, Pb, Cd. Metasaturation is achieved by cooling the molten alloy at the rate of 10<SP>4</SP>‹ C. per second.
