[Also in Division B5] A welding device for making packages from a tube filled with liquid comprises supports 1, 2 movable along horizontal columns 3, 4. Welding dies 8, 9 mounted on rails 6, 7 are rotatable about axes 5 secured to the supports 1, 2. Springs 12 act so that the surfaces of the dies 8, 9 form an acute angle when in the open position (Fig. 1) and are held by pins 13 in slots 14. The tube 15, which is a strip of plastics or coated paper folded longitudinally at 17 and having a welded seam 16, hangs between the dies 8, 9 and extends downwards into a shaping device, Fig. 5 (not shown). In operation, the supports 1, 2 are moved towards each other and the dies 8, 9 compress the tube 15, forming initially a wedgeshaped cross-section, Fig. 2 (not shown). Further closing causes rotation of the dies about their axes 5 turning the seam 16 away from the centre-line of the tube. This action, and the simultaneous increase in pressure in the liquid due to the compression, removes folds from the parts of the tube to be welded. The shaping device, Fig. 5 (not shown), comprises lateral and lower shaping dies (21), (22), movable in coordination with the welding device above. The lateral shaping dies can contact the tube satisfactorily due to the turning away of the seam 16.</p> |
