A machine for connecting a mouthpiece 5 provided with a flat mouth end to a cigarillo 35, cigarette or the like by means of a connector sheet 39 incorporating an imprint on part of its surface, comprises a cigarillo feeder 4, a mouthpiece feeder 3, a connector sheet supply means 6, an assembly conveyer drum 1, a rolling drum 7, aligning grippers 12 on the drum 1 and drive means 19 for the supply means 6 including control means to provide a uniform position of the severance points between the imprint on the connector sheet and the cutting edge. The mouthpieces 5 are fed in turn onto surfaces 9 of the drum 2 on which they roll through about 180‹ to rest against groove edges 8 where they are held by suction, as shown in Fig. 2. On transfer to the drum 1, the mouthpieces are held thereon and aligned by cam actuated grippers 12 that close around their mouth ends. Cigarillos 35 are then fed to the drum 1 and abutted against the aligned mouthpieces 5 whilst held by suction in known manner. Gummed connect- or sheets 39 are then attached to the mouthpiece - cigarillo assemblies on drum 1 and wrapped round them on rolling drum 7. Control of the position of the imprint on the cut connector sheets 39 is effected by controlling the speed of a connector strip 38 driving roll 25 by means of a differential drive 24 automatically adjusted by a motor 27 in response to a switch device 28. The device 28 is controlled by a photo diode 30, that detects the position of the imprint on the connector strip 38, in conjunction with a electromagnetic timing signal source 29 driven by the drum 1.
