Aromatic polyamide nitriles

Title polymers of formula (where R is a divalent (cyclo) aliphatic or aromatic residue and is a tetravalent aromatic residue) are produced by reacting aromatic dicyanodicarboxylic acids whose cyano grps. are in ortho position to the carboxy grps., with diisocyanates, or amide-forming derivs of such aromatic dicarboxylic acids are reacted with diamines. Reaction is effected in soln. at 0 to 100 degrees C, and the polymers obtained are separated by precipitation. Use is for foils, coatings, etc. The polymers may be cylcised and then used for mouldings or high-temp. adhesives.
