Esters of glycols are prepared by contacting a mono-olefine with an organic monocarboxylic acid solution containing a palladous salt and a nitrate or nitrite of a metal of Group I, II or VIII of the Mendeleef Periodic Table. Oxygen and nitric or nitrous acid, or a nitrogen oxide may be present and the palladous salt may be a chloride, acetate or nitrate which may be formed in situ by the addition of palladium. The proportions of mono- and di-esters may be varied by adjusting the conditions and byproducts are acetaldehyde, vinyl acetate, ethylidine diacetate. Examples describe the preparation of ethylene and propylene glycol mono- and di-esters. |
