[Also in Division E1] Composite cable shielding 7 comprises metallurgically bonded layers of aluminium 13, steel 17 and copper 15; the thickness of the aluminium being greater than the combined thicknesses of the steel and copper, there being one or two layers of copper (23), (29) (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) exposed on one or both faces respectively of the composite. The total thickness of the aluminium may be more than twice the combined thicknesses of the copper and steel. In the embodiments having two copper layers, the aluminium is between two steel layers (Fig. 3, not shown) or vice versa (Fig. 4, not shown). Layers of the same metal may be of equal thickness. Each copper layer may be 0À0002 to 0À0015 inch; the thicknesses or aggregate thicknesses of the aluminium and steel may be 0À004 to 0À008 inch and 0À0015 to 0À004 inch respectively. The shielding 7 may be corrugated and incorporated in a cable between flexible insulating sleeves (3), (5) (Fig. 1, not shown) which may also be made of resilient material. The steel may be low alloy, low carbon, or stainless. |
