Dust or spray precipitator comprises a means of charging particles e.g. UV tube, beta-ray emitter, or HT wires, followed by a fibrous plate transverse across air flow, positively charged, which traps contaminants. Fibres may be conductive e.g. steel wool, glass or synthetic fibre with conductive coating, vacuum deposited; or may be non-conducting fibre blended with metal wire. Filter units are cheap and may be disposable being removed when clogged or discharged. Air cleaning is effective even with dust or liquid particles 1 mu dia. i.e. in the physiologically hazardous range. Relatively low potentials may be used.
