PURPOSE: To provide a water absorbent composed of polysaccharides having liquid absorbability even to a metal salt aq. soln. or water-containing alcohol. CONSTITUTION: Polysaccharides are compounded with a water absorbent. As polysaccharides, ones becoming water-insoluble by heat treatment are pref. from an aspect of handling properties. Further, polysaccharides have physicochemical properties such that constitutional sugar consists of five kinds of D-glucose, D-galactose, D-glucronic acid, D-ribose and D-ribulonic acid (1), a constitutional mol. ratio is D-glucose : D-galactose : D-glucronic acid : D-ribose : D-ribulonic acid = 10:1.8-2.9:1.8-2.6: 0.5-1.7:0.5-1.7 (2), a mol. wt. measured by gel filter chromatography is about 1×10<3> -10×10<6> (3) and the content of an O-acetyl group is 0-10wt.% (4).
