PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital still camera that utilizes the dynamic range of an image pickup means to the utmost and properly adjusts an exposure. SOLUTION: An MPU 5 detects a maximum pixel value in image data obtained from a CCD 2 and changes an exposure to obtain the maximum pixel value that is a prescribed value. For example, a dynamic range can widely be used by adjusting the exposure so that the maximum pixel value obtained from the CCD 2 reaches a possible maximum value of output of a pixel and then the image quality can be enhanced.
