<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of speed control with high precision being not possible when a variation in a gap between a speed detecting pattern and a detecting sensor occurs when a speed detecting pattern is provided on a belt to stabilize the travelling speed and speed detection is carried out by the detecting sensor in a belt device used as a transfer paper carrying belt or an intermediate transfer belt in an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: In the belt 200, the speed detecting pattern 210 is provided along the travelling direction of the belt. A press member 220 loaded with the detecting sensor 211 is restricted to be movable only in the vertical direction of the surface of the belt 200 and an abutting surface 223 is pressed to the surface of the belt by a pressure spring 225. The distance between the detecting sensor 211 and the speed detecting pattern 210 is stabilized as a specified distance determined by the shape of the press member 220.
