PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved catheter assembly capable of increased control of fluid infusion to and fluid withdrawal from a patient through the catheter.SOLUTION: A catheter assembly 2 includes: a catheter hub 4; a hollow tubular catheter 10 having a proximal end connected to a distal end of the catheter hub; a needle 30 having a needle tip 36; a hollow extension tube 62 having a distal end connected to a part between proximal and distal ends of the catheter hub 4; and a valve assembly 70 disposed within an internal chamber of the catheter hub 4. The valve assembly 70 comprises: a first valve member 72 closing the distal end of the extension tube 62 and opening it under the action of a pressurized fluid within the extension tube 62; and a second valve member 74 preventing the flow of fluid through the internal chamber to or from the proximal end of the catheter hub 4.
